Welcome! I am Johann Liang, a data scientist with the full skill set for a data analysis pipeline. My goal is to be an expert in extracting actionable insights from data regardless of their type or size. For preprocessing and modeling, my favorite tools are Python, R, and Spark. For reporting, I like Jupyter, R markdown, and HTML+CSS+JavaScript. I love visual information, particularly the interactive ones. For years I've admired the interactive visualizations that I stumbled upon across the web. Nowadays I still get all excited when an interactive chart shows me information in an unexpected way, and I've learned to build a few of those charts on my own. I have come to love D3.js along with vanilla JavaScript, jQuery, and Google Maps JavaScript API for such tasks. Throughout this website you will find projects that I've completed on my own on data analysis, modeling, visualization, stochastic simulation, optimization, and algorithm design using tools mentioned above.
A bit about myself: I studied physics, math, and philosophy in college and obtained my Ph.D. in Physics and Astronomy from Johns Hopkins University modeling Milky Way Galaxy's dust particle emission in the far-infrared. After graduation I became a college faculty teaching physics and astronomy in Baltimore.
If you want to collaborate on a project, it will be great to hear from you.
